If your cable TV provider still offers analog channels, you can record one channel while watching/recording another. With only one cable box, you can descramble and tune in only one digital channel at a time to record or view. As long as you view or record a digital channel and view or record an analog channel, you can do both at the same time, but you cannot do two digital channels at the same time. For this, you would need two descrambler cable boxes. With this in mind, see the diagram above. Basically you use a signal splitter to connect the first VCR and the cable box from the wall. The first VCR's output goes into an A/B switch and then to the TV which is set to channel 3. The cable box output goes into the second VCR. Then the second VCR's output connects to the A/B switch and on to the TV. You can record or watch digital channels and record/view analog channels using the A or B position of the switch. The first VCR has to have a cable ready tuner, which most do, to pick ...

Connect your cables as follows:
1. Antenna to RF input on converter box
2. Converter box RF Out to TV, connect to VCR RF input
3. VCR RF output connect to RF Modulator antenna input
4. RF Modulator RF Out to TV, connect to TV RF input jack.
5. DVD player yellow, white, red to RF Modulator yellow, white, red inputs
This will do it, just remember to select channel 3 (or 4) on all your devices, TV, VCR, Converter box RF output.

Thank you!
1. Connect Blu-ray player to HDTV using HDMI cable (HDMI input 1 on HDTV).
2. Connect HD cable TV box to HDTV using HDMI cable (HDMI input 2 on HDTV).
3. Connect Cable TV box to TIVO using RG-6 coaxial cable from cable box RF output to TIVO RF/ANT input.
You can try the RCA composite connections also (yellow, white, red).
4. Connect TIVO to HDTV using RCA cables (yellow, white, red) from TIVO outputs to HDTV inputs.
TIVO Series 2 cannot record in High-Def video, only standard definition
but many HD cable boxes, including Scientific Atlanta, will output HD channels to the Composite video (yellow)
output so a VCR or TIVO can record the video and audio in standard def. Playback to an HDTV will not
look as good but it is better than nothing.
I have a rooftop antenna and do not have cable or satellite tv.
HOW do I connect the antenna, the VCR, and the DTV converter box so that
1. I can watch over the air programs on the new HDTV, and
2. I can record programs via the VCR? It's an older GO-VIDEO brand.
Thanks for any help you could provide!!
Therefore you can view TV shows on your HDTV while at the same time recording another TV show on the VCR. To do this you need a standard RF signal splitter which you can buy at any electronics store for $5.
Connect your antenna to the splitter input (RG-6 coaxial cable) and then connect two RG-6 coaxial cables from the splitter outputs, one to the Zinwell's RF antenna input and the other to the HDTV antenna input. This provides TV input signals to both the HDTV and the converter box.
Now connect another RG-6 coaxial cable from the converter box's RF output (To TV) to the VCR/DVD combo unit's RF/ANTENNA input. This provides a converted signal to the VCR so you can record. Tune channels on the Zinwell and have the VCR on channel 3.
Connect RCA cables (yellow, white and red) from the combo unit's output to the HDTV inputs (yellow, white and red). This provides playback from the VCR/DVD to the HDTV. Select the HDTV video input for the connected combo unit when playing tapes or DVDs.
You need to connect the outside VHF/UHF antenna coax cable to the converter box ANTENNA INPUT. Local channels are tuned on the converter box using the remote that came with the converter box. Your TV should have multiple inputs for video and audio including coax and RCA. RCA inputs are yellow, white, red. You have several options. You can connect the satellite receiver to the TV
using coax and connect the converter box to the TV using RCA cables. Then select satellite channels on the TV coax input,
typically channel 3 or 4 and local channels by switching to the TV's RCA inputs, typically VIDEO 1 or VIDEO 2.
The VCR can be connected as well by using the coax inputs and the RCA inputs and outputs to the TV. Depending on what you want to do, record local channels and/or record satellite channels, connect the VCR in between the converter box and the TV and between the satellite receiver and the TV. The VCR will pass-thru to the TV via the coax connections but you'll have to have the VCR powered on for the RCA connections to always work, recording or just viewing. Select LINE INPUT on the VCR for
the RCA connected input. Switch inputs on the TV using the TV's remote.
As far as the second TV, you will probably want to buy a second converter box for it. If so, you'll need a RF splitter so you can connect the single coax from the antenna thru the splitter and on to each of the converter boxes.
Try to keep it simple by separating the VHF/UHF antenna connection thru the converter box to the TV and the satellite connection to the TV. Some people have run into problems when trying to run the converter box output thru the satellite receiver.
By using the TV's different inputs you can switch to local channels or satellite channels.
With all those remotes switching
inputs and channels, you may want to think about getting a learning universal remote.

Select channel 3 (or 4) on the TV. If you want to add the VCR/DVD combo, assuming it has a tuner and RF in and out, just connect the splitter output to the VCR RF input instead of the TV and then connect the combo unit's RF out to the TV RF in. Select channel 3 (or 4) on the combo's tuner. Then for the DVD, run RCA video and audio cables (yellow, white, red) from combo unit RCA outputs to the TV RCA inputs (yellow to yellow etc.) For TVs without RCA inputs, you need a RF Modulator to use the DVD.
If your TV has enough RCA inputs, connect the Converter box's RCA outputs and the sat box's RCA outputs to the TV using two sets of RCA inputs and select the video input on the TV to get sat box or DTV box. To add the VCR/DVD combo, you could connect sat box to VCR using RCA cables and then connect converter box to VCR using coaxial cable to RF input. This way you can select either line input on the combo unit for the satellite or channel 3 for the over-the-air channels. Output to the TV using RCA video and audio cables (yellow, white, red) from combo unit's common (VCR/DVD) output.
I used an HDMI cable from the cable box to the TV. I connected the green, blue and red wires from the DVD/VCR output to the red, white, yellow audios & video component in jacks. I can play back video tapes and dvd's. I can't figure out how to record from the tv. None of my connections worked.
i want to use HDMI exclusively - would an HDMI switcher allow me to pass audio and video for each component?
I am writing a user manual for my class project, would I need permission to use a combination of the graphical/text instruction for it? The user manual is showing how to operate and hook up a VCR.
Thanks,
James
Thanks for asking.
http://www.amazon.com/Coaxial-Adapter-Female-RCA-Male/dp/B000AAL4PA
it only costs $1.95
Does that make sense?
1) Return the TV, if possible, and buy a TV with analog RCA audio outputs for connection to a stereo receiver.
2) Buy a Audio/Video receiver with Dolby Digital decoding. Make sure it has digital coax audio input. You can get one for around $179.
Then connect current TV digital coax audio output to receiver digital coax audio input using a digital audio RCA cable and listen thru loudspeakers.
3) Buy a $40 digital TV converter box and connect stereo RCA outputs to stereo receiver inputs (white and red RCA).

How do I hook up all of this equipment.

* Sony STR510 receiver
* Tivo Humax DVR (series 2)
* Scientific Atlanta 4250 HD cable box
I want to be able to still use my Tivo (for now) to record in standard definition until we switch to FIOS and/or upgrade to a Tivo HD box. Problem is, I am completely lost when it comes to hooking all this up. I would like to run all the sound through the receiver.
The Tivo is the only one without an HDMI port.
I have plenty of HDMI cables,as well as composite. I do not have any other cables handy, so if possible, want to use what I have.
Thanks much for any help you can offer.

For audio, connect stereo RCA cables (white, red) from Tivo audio out to A/V receiver analog audio input such as AUX, CD etc. and for cable TV, connect RCA stereo (white, red) from cable box audio out to A/V receiver analog audio input. For surround sound, use optical or digital coaxial audio cable from cable box out to A/V receiver digital audio input.
Cable Signal, Dish box, VCR, all 3 to the TV? I want to record from Dish or Cable.
Looked in "diagrams" but did not see one.
Thanks
If you wanted to use composite video and audio connections (3 RCA cables, yellow, white and red) and your TV has these inputs, you would get a better picture and stereo sound. Most cable TV boxes and sat boxes have these RCA outputs. You would just need to buy an RCA type Audio/Video switch box. Amazon.com has them for about $20. The A/V switch box has 2 or more inputs for each of the 3 RCA cables and 1 output. You could install the A/V switchbox between the cable TV box / Sat box and the VCR. Use the VCR's A/V inputs (yellow, white, red) and then output to the TV using 3 RCA cables. Set the VCR to LINE INPUT for recording and set the TV to the proper VIDEO input.
A/B switches and splitters are available at Radio Shack, Home Depot and online for about $5.

Since everything is being broascast digital, is it still possible to record to a analog VCR, or do I need to update to a digital recorder?
Thanks for your help.
The Insignia brand DTV converter box is the same as the Zenith so look under Zenith DTV for the codes if Insignia is not listed. Zinwell may be a problem. RCA should be listed. Philco should be listed but check if at all possible before buying the remote. Otherwise make sure you can return it. I can say that for the Philips universal remote I bought at Wal-Mart, the code for my Insignia (Zenith) DTV converter box is 267.
For those with extra cash to spend, you can get a very heavy duty programmable remote such as the Harmony from Logitech. If you're unfamiliar with Logitech's Harmony remotes, here's the concept in a nutshell: you set up the remote by plugging it into your computer and telling a web-based application what gear you own. Then you set up "Activities" like "Watch DVD," "Watch TV," or "Play Xbox," describing all the different input settings for all your different gear. Many universal remotes work with all your stuff, but in order to switch to the DVD player, you have to turn this thing to Input 4, that other thing to "DVD," turn on the DVD player, switch the remote over to DVD control, and so on. On a Harmony, you press the Watch DVD activity and it does all those things for you. The latest Harmony is the only remote you will ever need.
can't find the configuration i need in your list of diagrams.
I need to connect an old tv (no rca jacks), dtv converter box with old vcr and a dvd player to an a/v reciever.

Connect combo OUTPUTs (video and audio) to the TV INPUTs and select on the TV the input connected to the combo using the TV remote.
If your TV(s) do not have component video inputs, you will need to go to Radio Shack and buy one adapter cable which splits the video output from the DVD player (yellow) so that two TVs can be connected.
You can probably use a piggyback audio cable (white and red). This cable has a RCA male connector along with a female port at one end and a male RCA connector at the other end. Connect the male/female end to the DVD players yellow video output. Connect a RCA video cable (yellow) to the female port on the cable. Now you have two cables going out. Connect the other piggyback end to one TV (you can use white or red but pick one and leave the other color disconnected). Connect the yellow RCA video cable to the second TV's yellow video input. Be sure to select the proper video input on the TV. Insert DVD. Press PLAY on the DVD player and you will see two TVs with the same video.
You need 6 RCA analog audio cables connected to the Blu-ray audio outs and the player has to be set to PCM audio output, not bitstream.
Your Blu-ray movie has to have the PCM audio tracks available which many do, but not all.
You would connect all 6 RCA cables from the Blu-ray player to the proper INPUTS on the Marantz ie. Center, left surround, right surround etc.
Next connect 6 more RCA audio cables from the Marantz's AUDIO OUTPUTS ie. center, left surround etc. to your power amp's RCA analog inputs just the same as the pre-amp's 6. This provides the surround sound 6 channels to the amplifier for output to its connected 6 loudspeakers.
Now when you say lossless audio, I assume you mean Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and other cousin codecs. First of all, this audio source has to be available on the Blu-ray Disc. If it is and your Blu-ray player has the capability to handle it and send it out over multi-channel analog and you connect all the RCA cables up properly, then yes, it can be done. Be sure you find and connect the correct ports on the player, pre-amp and power-amp.
If your Blu-ray player only has HDMI out, then you are talking about buying new hardware anyway and you might as well get a current AVR with HDMI.
Thanks.
For DVD recorder 2, you have options. You can connect directly to HD cable box or you can connect recorder 2's inputs to recorder 1's outputs.
To connect directly to cable box, buy two sets of good quality piggyback audio cables. These cables are available online at Amazon.com or get them at Radio Shack. Basically they allow a second RCA cable connection coming off the first (piggyback) so you can connect to another device. Buy 2 sets because you need 3 cables (video, white audio, red audio) and connect to yellow, white and red jacks. This way both recorders get the same signals from the cable box.
If you want to passthru from recorder 1 to recorder 2, just connect 1's outputs to 2's inputs and 2's outputs (yellow, white, red) to the TV. Select the LINE input on recorder 2.
And yes the piggyback audio cable will work for the video connection as long as it is good quality cable. Buy thick cables, not cheap thin cables.
So you have 3 piggyback cables (video, audio, audio) going from cable box to recorder 1 inputs and then connect your regular RCA video and audio cables into the piggyback ports on each cable to the second recorder's 3 RCA inputs (yellow, white, red). Connect outputs of recorders to the HDTV. Select on the HDTV the proper source for viewing recordings.
I own the following devices: Just cannot seem to get the wiring correct .
On your “Over 100 Wiring Diagrams.” Is there any particular number there that would pertain EXACTLY to my needs for the following four devices?
I do not need or use a cable box. TV source comes right in from the cable company. Also, I do not use a RF Modulator nor Analog Converter Box as I do not even know what these are. Obviously there is no need for me to have one.
